Economists Now A Lot More Cheery About 2011

December 13, 2010

Economists have grown more optimistic about the outlook for U.S. growth next year, predicting the expansion will accelerate as 2011 progresses, according to the latest Wall Street Journal forecasting survey. The 55 respondents, not all of whom answer every question, raised their growth projections for gross domestic product for nearly every period, including the current quarter. On average, the economists now predict GDP will grow 2.6% in the current quarter at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, up from the 2.4% growth they projected in last month’s survey. The economy grew 2.5% in the third quarter.

Anthony Tjan: Dear Entrepreneur, Avoid First-Impression Mistakes

November 29, 2010

Poor first impressions are avoidable. I’m amazed by some of the really unfortunate mistakes that people make during important first meetings, whether it’s a job interview, an important pitch, or other high stakes first-time business encounters. The secret to avoiding these mistakes is to spend time preparing before the meeting. In today’s hyper-connected world, there’s no excuse for not learning as much as possible about whom you are meeting and their company. It’s the basic mental training you need to do before “game day.” And yet people don’t do it enough. If people prepped as much for an important business meeting as they did for a first date, there would be a lot more business success stories. Last week, I was conducting interviews for a position in our firm. I asked a candidate which of our portfolio companies he liked the best, and he could not remember the name of a single company. Another candidate came in and thought we were an advertising company (we are a venture capital firm). And it’s not just job seekers. Many entrepreneurs come to pitch ideas without studying in greater detail the backgrounds of the partners with whom they were meeting. It was easy to tell that, at most, they took a quick scan of our website prior, but didn’t spend enough time there, or didn’t focus on the right parts. Here are some common sense things to do before any meeting: Start with the company website and Google the person you are meeting. On the company website, I look up the person’s bio but I also Google the person to get other bios or profiles on the person. With the person’s bio in hand, you should lock in your mind the following facts: where they grew up, where they last worked, and where they went to school. As stupid as it sounds, make sure it is the bio of the person you are meeting; there are a lot of Chris Smith’s out there and sometimes they even work within the same company! Find an online image of the person. It is always more comfortable (not to mention easier to spot the person) when you know what he or she looks like before the meeting. I cannot tell you the psychology behind this, but I believe that the more unknowns you eliminate before a meeting, the less anxiety you’ll have in the actual meeting. When I have seen the person’s face, I go into a meeting feeling like I have met the person before and am more at ease. This is also helpful to do for phone calls. I remember once preparing for a call with a well known CEO of a Fortune 100 company, seeing his friendly face online ahead of time relaxed me. Get the latest news or analysis on the company. For a public company, I’ll get the latest analyst report and look up the recent stock trading price and trends. It’s funny how people seem to be happier when their stock is on the rise. For private companies, I look to see if bloggers or sites such as TechCrunch have mentioned them. Finally, I do a quick scan of their profile on compete.com (or alexa.com) to get a snapshot of their traffic trend. If you are short on time, just make sure you can fill in the following blanks: “The company I am seeing does/makes _________ and it is different because _________.” Find out who is connected to the person or firm you are meeting and talk to them . Someone once said to me that, in the VC world, the best way to get a good first meeting is to be introduced to the firm. With Facebook, LinkedIn, and online school and work alumni databases, you have a pretty good shot at speaking to someone to get color on just about anyone or any company. Find someone familiar with that person or company, and ask him or her to share as much background as possible. Go in knowing your top objectives for the meeting and the top one to two questions you would like answered. I loved it when a serial entrepreneur with whom I had a meeting said right off the bat, “What do you hope to accomplish with this meeting?” I welcomed the directness. With your top objectives and top questions in mind, also understand the expected time frame of the meeting. Know this information but don’t show off. One of the dangers of doing even a little background research is that you can come across as obsequious, i.e. a suck up. One of my partners has a great line — act stupid, win smart. Be armed with the data so that you can answer or direct the conversation appropriately; your goal is not to demonstrate what you know of the person or company but what you had in mind when you first set up the meeting. Two-thirds of the people surveyed in the latest Bloomberg Global Poll say a bubble is inflating property values in China, where the economy grew at a 9.6 percent annual rate in the third quarter. Still, when asked to identify one or two markets offering the best opportunities in the next year, 33 percent of investors cite China, more than any other country. Bloomberg’s Erik Schatzker reports. Ian Somerhalder: The Oil Isn’t Gone, but the People Are Still Here

October 22, 2010

While some kids grow up eating hot dogs and playing tag in their backyard, I grew up in Louisiana swimming in Lake Pontchartrain, fishing in the bayous, and eating Gulf seafood. Like everyone else on the Gulf coast, these waters are literally part of who I am. Over the past six months , I’ve watched the BP oil disaster unfold and threaten to change not only the lives of my friends and family, but the very culture of those who grew up on the Gulf. Instead of spending the past summer boating, swimming and fishing, Gulf families have spent these last few months worrying about whether they’d be able to make rent on their fishing boats, whether they could afford enough fresh fish to keep their restaurants open, or whether they could find enough people to keep the rooms at their hotels full as the regular seasonal tourists failed to arrive. And just as oil still lingers in the Louisiana marshes, these concerns haven’t gone away just because the TV cameras have. Though six months have passed since the Deepwater Horizon sank and millions of gallons of oil started spewing into the Gulf of Mexico, we are still far from saying, “mission accomplished.” Many people that rely on the rich fisheries and diverse ecosystems of the Gulf to keep their industries going–including shrimpers and oystermen, waitresses and charter boat captains — are still hurting. We can’t just forget about them. If we want to rebuild the Gulf economy and preserve its special and unique way of life for future generations, we need to move full speed ahead with the recovery and restoration of the Gulf coast. A disaster like this can never happen again. A healthy Gulf — full of oysters and shrimp, brown pelicans and turtles — is not only the cornerstone of the Gulf economy, but also of Gulf culture and Gulf people. But we cannot protect the Gulf, or protect oilrig workers from potentially deadly accidents, if in the wake of this catastrophe we rush right back to “drill, baby, drill.” Promises from oil companies will not protect the Gulf from further damage, nor will they protect the jobs of local fishermen, restaurant owners, and tourism industry workers during the long recovery ahead — let alone keep them at work if another disaster happens. I grew up with people whose livelihoods depend on the oil and gas industry, and I know that the industry has very deep roots in the Gulf and particularly Louisiana. Even coming from that perspective, though, the irrefutable truth is that we need better laws in place to regulate how we drill off our shores — laws that will protect the wildlife and coastlines that Gulf coast residents depend on to pay the bills and bring home dinner each night. The BP oil spill , the largest accidental oil spill in human history, is only the latest, most visible evidence of the kind of environmental destruction that has been going on in the Gulf for decades. Louisiana loses a football field of wetlands every 45 minutes — and nearly 60 percent of that is attributed to the oil and gas activity that has ravaged our beloved bayous for years. The fact that a mere six months after BP’s terrible disaster, the government has already made the decision to lift the moratorium and allow deepwater drilling to resume is shocking to me. This is just the latest indication that Washington isn’t taking into account the lives and livelihoods of those who live along the gulf coast and depend on its waters. Until we know that regulations are effective and that all the gaps that allowed the BP oil spill to happen have been closed, we have no business continuing to drill. There is simply too much to lose. Obviously, we should all be working to reduce our dependence on dirty fossil fuels, and turning toward clean energy technologies that do not pose a threat to our shorelines, our way of life, or our environment; however, that transition will take some time. In the immediate future, we, the citizens of an oil addicted nation, need to step forward and urge the government to take responsibility and help make coastal communities whole again — by holding BP accountable, conducting short and long-term monitoring, and investing in economic opportunities to support locally-driven, sustainable recovery that restores and enhances America’s Gulf coast. We can’t undo our past mistakes, but we can make sure that the clear warning broadcast by this spill and its terrible aftermath haven’t been in vain. Rather than going right back to our old ways, let’s chart a new path to a cleaner, more sustainable future. All the Gulf’s residents are counting on us; we can’t afford to let them — or countless other coastal communities — down again.
