Rockies’ Jim Tracy, Angels’ Mike Scioscia Win MLB Manager of Year Awards

November 18, 2009

By Erik Matuszewski Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) — Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels was voted American League Manager of the Year for the second time, while Colorado’s Jim Tracy earned National League honors for turning around a team with a losing record. Scioscia beat out Ron Gardenhire of the Minnesota Twins and Joe Girardi of the New York Yankees in balloting by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He was listed first on 15 of the 28 ballots cast by two writers from each of the AL cities. Tracy received 29 of the 32 first-place votes in the NL to finish ahead of Tony La Russa of the St. Louis Cardinals and Joe Torre of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Scioscia, 50, captured the AL award after the Angels overcame a series of injuries and the death of pitcher Nick Adenhart in an April 9 car accident to win the AL West Division title for the third straight year. The Angels finished Major League Baseball’s regular season with a 97-65 record, the second-best in the majors, to make the postseason for the sixth time in Scioscia’s 10-year tenure. Los Angeles used 14 starting pitchers because of injuries to John Lackey , Joe Saunders , Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar , while Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero also spent time on the disabled list. Angels in Playoffs The Angels swept the Boston Red Sox in the opening round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual World Series champion Yankees in the AL Championship Series. Voting for the awards was conducted before the playoffs. Scioscia, who also was honored as the AL’s top manager in 2002, had 106 points. Gardenhire finished second in the voting for a record fifth time, receiving six first-place votes and 72 points. Gardenhire’s Twins won 17 of their final 21 games to win the AL Central title. Girardi, who won the NL award with the Florida Marlins in 2006, received four first-place votes and 34 points after leading the Yankees to a major league-best 103-59 record and their record 27th World Series title. Tracy, 53, helped the Rockies turn around a losing season and set a franchise record with 92 wins after replacing Clint Hurdle on May 29. The Rockies were in last place in the NL West Division with an 18-28 record when Hurdle was fired and Tracy was promoted from bench coach. Colorado went 72-42 the rest of the way to earn the NL’s wild-card playoff berth. In-Season Hire Tracy is just the second manager to win the award after being hired during the season, following Jack McKeon of the Marlins in 2003. Tracy receives the award two years after he was fired by the Pittsburgh Pirates following 94 losses in 2007 and 95 the previous season. He also spent five years as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2001 through 2005 and compiled a 427-383 record. Don Baylor was the only previous Rockies manager to win the NL award, in 1995. La Russa, a four-time winner, received two first-place votes. Torre, a two-time manager of the year in the AL with the Yankees, got one first-place vote. Selected members of the writers’ association vote for their top three choices and managers get five points for first-place votes, three points for second and one point for third. The BBWAA is scheduled to announce the winner of the NL Cy Young Award tomorrow. Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals won the AL award as his league’s top pitcher yesterday. Rockies Win 5-4 at Phillies to Tie National League Playoff Series at 1-1

October 8, 2009

By Erik Matuszewski Oct. 8 (Bloomberg) — Yorvit Torrealba hit his first home run in more than five months as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 to tie their first-round playoff series at one game each. Torrealba hit a two-run homer off Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels in the fourth inning as the Rockies opened a 4-0 lead and then held off the defending World Series champions at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The best-of-five National League division series now moves to Coors Field in Denver for two games, with Game 3 scheduled for Oct. 10. The weather forecast calls for near-freezing temperatures in Colorado and possible snow showers. Two other Major League Baseball playoff games are scheduled for today, as the Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 2 of their NL series after winning last night, and the Boston Red Sox visit the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of their American League series. Hamels took the loss today for the Phillies, allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. Hamels, who was 4-0 during the team’s World Series run last postseason, has a 0-7 record in 10 day starts this season, with a 5.60 earned run average. Hamels had complained before Game 1, saying the early start times for both the first two games were unfair and that most players would rather play at times they’ve grown comfortable with over the season. Early Score The Rockies pushed across a run in the first inning, as Carlos Gonzalez singled, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a groundout. With two outs in the fourth inning, Torrealba pushed Colorado’s lead to 3-0 by hitting his third homer of the season and first since May 6. Dexter Fowler’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 for the Rockies the next inning. It was the last inning for Hamels, who later left the stadium after his wife, Heidi, went into labor with the couple’s first child. The Phillies came within 4-3 in the sixth inning, as Ryan Howard had a run-scoring double to chase Rockies starter Aaron Cook from the game and Raul Ibanez added a two-run double against reliever Jose Contreras . Cook had scattered three hits over five shutout innings before giving up three straight hits to start the sixth. Fowler hit another sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning as the Rockies pushed their lead to 5-3. The Phillies again got within a run on Jayson Werth’s solo homer in the eighth inning and put two runners on base in the ninth before Rockies closer Huston Street retired Shane Victorino on a line drive to seal the win and even the series. Phillies Beat Rockies 5-1 in Opening Game of National League Postseason

October 7, 2009

By Michael Buteau Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) — Cliff Lee pitched a complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-1 in the opener of their first-round National League playoff series. The game was the first of three Major League Baseball playoff contests scheduled for today. Lee allowed just six hits and struck out five batters as he recorded the 14th complete game of his career. It was Lee’s fourth complete game since joining the Phillies, the defending World Series champions, in a trade with the Cleveland Indians in July. The Rockies broke up Lee’s chance for a shutout in the top of the ninth inning when Troy Tulowitzki doubled to right-center field, scoring Carlos Gonzalez . Ubaldo Jimenez took the loss for the Rockies, allowing five earned runs off nine hits over five innings. Game 2 of the best-of-five-game series is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon in Philadelphia. The winner will face either the St. Louis Cardinals or Los Angeles Dodgers, who begin their first-round series tonight in Los Angeles. In today’s other game, the New York Yankees will host the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium. The Rockies and Phillies were scoreless through the first four innings at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, as Jimenez and Lee combined to strike out seven batters. The Phillies took the lead in the fifth when Raul Ibanez hit a hard ground ball past first baseman Todd Helton , scoring Jayson Werth from first. Philadelphia went ahead 2-0 when Carlos Ruiz hit a 3-2 breaking ball to right field, scoring Ibanez. Three Runs The Phillies stretched their lead to 5-0 with a three-run sixth inning. The Twins advanced to the playoffs last night with a 6-5, 12-inning win over the Detroit Tigers in a tiebreaking game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis for the American League Central Division title. Minnesota won 17 of its final 21 games to slip past Detroit, which became the first team in major-league history to lose a division title after holding a three-game lead with four to play. Yankees Poised to Claim AL East; Cardinals, Dodgers Clinch Playoff Berths

September 27, 2009

By Nancy Kercheval Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) — The New York Yankees can claim their division, the American League’s best record and home-field advantage through the Major League Baseball playoffs today with a win over the Boston Red Sox. In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals won the Central division title with a 6-3 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver. The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a playoff berth by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, sending manager Joe Torre to his record-tying 14th straight postseason series. The Yankees beat the Red Sox 3-0 to raise their season record to 99-56 yesterday as CC Sabathia became the first pitcher to claim 19 victories. No other AL team can win 100 games this season, and the league has home-field advantage in the World Series. “We need one win basically in the next seven games,” manager Joe Girardi said. “You’d like to clinch as soon as possible so you could maybe give the guys a couple days and make sure that you keep them well-rested and strong.” Sabathia (19-7) went seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight for the Yankees. Mariano Rivera got his 43rd save after pitching one inning. Sabathia could reach 20 wins with a victory against Tampa Bay on Oct. 2. “He’s been everything that we have asked for and more,” Girardi said. “He is an ace.” Robinson Cano hit his 24th home run of the season in the sixth inning to give the Yankees their first run of the game at Yankee Stadium. Johnny Damon singled in the eighth to drive in two runs. ‘Doesn’t Matter’ Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-6) gave up six hits and one run in seven innings for the Red Sox, who dropped to 91-63. “I don’t think it matters,” Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis said. “Both of us are probably going to the playoffs unless we don’t do something right.” Boston leads the Texas Rangers by 6 1/2 games in the race to claim the wild card playoff spot. The Red Sox have a “magic number” of three — Boston wins plus Texas losses — to eliminate the Rangers and get into the playoffs. Jim Thome hit a two-run single that followed two runs scored on walks in the eighth inning as the Dodgers (93-62) sealed the 8-4 win at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. George Sherrill (1-0) allowed one run in 1/3 inning to get the win. Denny Bautista (1-1) gave up one hit and two runs in 1/3 inning for the loss. The Pirates fell to 57-96. Los Angeles has a magic number of three to clinch the National League West for their first back-to-back division titles since 1977-78.
